Empty nesting is upon us!

It was my birthday last week, and it was the first time in 24 years that I haven't had at least one of my children home for the customary early morning tea in bed with present opening.

It is also the first time that my husband has bought me what I specifically asked for. Now don't get me wrong, he always buys me the most extravagant, thoughtful gifts, but will not let me dictate the gift I am to receive. I can be a tad bossy, so I guess this is his way of saying ..."I've got this". This year I asked for the Dyson Airwrap multi styler thinking he would just ignore me like he usually does, and considering the heart stopping price of it, I really didn't expect to receive such a generous gift!

Perhaps he bought into my female rationale (trying to justify the price of something). We all know that I cannot blow dry my own hair. I'm not being a spoilt, precious brat, I honestly just don't seem to have the co-ordination necessary to use a brush and hairdryer in a functional way at the same time. No matter how hard I have tried, my hair always comes out looking frizzy and rather disheveled. So my weekly visit to the hairdresser for a wash and blow costs about R300 (worth every cent for the exceptional head massage I receive). Anyway I digress...R300 x 4 weeks in a month = R1200 per month, therefore over a 9 month period if I didn't go to the hairdresser I would be able to buy the Dyson Airwrap. Get my thinking? Ok I will have to wear a hat for 9 months, but perhaps it would be worth it? Anyway I still wasn't convinced that I would be able to create a less frizzy hairstyle just because it costs a gazzilion times more than any other hairdryer. So my absolute surprise when I received this very generous gift from my hubby. Perhaps he was concerned that I would be wearing a hat for 9 months! So? You ask...Well here's the thing...It absolutely does do frizz free, and so quickly too! I am still trying to get the curler attachment to go in the right direction, and my curls don't hold for very long, but am sure that with some practice and the right hair products I will eventually get this right. My hair hasn't ever been washed and styled so often, just loving my new toy!

But back onto the empty nest...I can honestly say I felt quite sad not to have the children at the end of the bed sipping tea and fighting over who's gift had to be opened first. I did however wake up to beautiful messages from my daughters and a Dear Mom. Happy Birthday. From Duncan, message from my son. My husband clearly also felt the gap, and compensated so beautifully by distracting me with a gorgeous breakfast at Paul's...hot chocolate and pastries fixes anything, and if that doesn't nothing a BIG glass of wine can't fix, so he covered that too...dinner at my favourite restaurant, Bellagio, with a glass or 2...3 or was it 4 wines? Fabulous end to a very spoilt day, and yes I did survive the kids not being there.
